The global fast-food chain has taken down a holiday advertisement made via Artificial Intelligence after encountering considerable public disapproval.

The 45-second ad was created using AI video tools and was first released on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Viewer Response and Decision to Pull

Shortly after its release, audiences online denounced the employment of AI in the commercial. Many labeled it "creepy" and "poorly edited".

"This experience is an important lesson as we examine the appropriate use of Artificial Intelligence," commented a statement from the company.

The advert was created for the brand by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed various situations that often go badly during the festive season, with the theme "the worst time of the year".

A Growing Movement of AI in Advertising

Campaigns that incorporate generative AI have emerged as a increasing trend among major companies, notably for the holiday campaign season.

  • Another beverage giant has also launched consecutive AI-created holiday ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: Since videos created using current AI video tools are prone to degrade the more extended they are, most AI video outputs tend to be only six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also sparked worries about automation in the production industry, with some commenters pointing out it could negatively impact opportunities for actors.

Defense from the Creators

Following the video's removal, a producer's CEO, Melanie Bridge, stood by the advert.

According to her, the production process required "seven weeks" and involved generating "thousands of takes" which were then crafted afterward "just as we would on any traditional production".

"This was not an experiment," Bridge asserted. "We consider it a proper commercial."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's commercial was largely criticized, the response for some AI-assisted campaigns has been varied.

For instance, a recent AI-created Christmas ad from Coca-Cola according to analysis achieved a 61% "positive feedback" from the public.

However, various brands have likewise encountered criticism for using the technique in their campaigns. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that critics called "lazy" and "disturbing".

The incident highlights the ongoing debate within the marketing and creative sectors about the trade-off between new tools and creative integrity.
