At least 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.
A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in public projects. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
